FAQ

1. What does the S+ method entail?
The S+ strengthening program is based on scientific research demonstrating that strength training can benefit individuals of all ages, regardless of their physical condition. Thus, it is a personalized approach that is adapted to the needs of each client.

This highly safe training program, inspired by H.I.T. (high-intensity training), is unique in its simplicity, the way the exercises are performed and the quality of the coaching offered at the S+ studio. Each private session lasts about 20 minutes, is done once a week, and will help you develop your muscles and strengthen your bones. From a scientific point of view, 20 minutes is all it takes to gain strength.

During each session—what at S+ we call “your assistant” (See Q.#9) offers you five to seven exercises to perform on our high-end exercise equipment. They will make sure that you progress at a controlled and steady pace so that you do each movement correctly and avoid injury.

The S+ program; it’s short, safe and effective!

2. Why are 20 minutes of training per week enough?
The beauty of the S+ strength training program is that it allows you to become stronger with only one session per week. That said, you may want to train twice a week to challenge yourself and improve your results.

Surprisingly, studies have shown that beyond that, there is no added benefit or improved results.

If you were strength training two or three times per week and found it wasn’t enough, it might be because you’re not using your muscles properly. It is possible that you are doing the exercises either too quickly or that the load is not heavy enough for your level of strength. However, if you train too hard, you run the risk of feeling unwanted fatigue or even injury. So again, 20 minutes when done correctly, is often enough.

3. What are the benefits of the S+ training program?
Each 20-minute session, done once a week, will allow you to:
  • Gain muscle mass and become stronger
  • Burn more fat
  • Prevent injuries and bone loss
  • Alleviate stress and enhance your quality of life
  • Boost metabolism
  • Improve balance
  • Have more energy on a daily basis
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Delay loss of autonomy
  • Enhance cardiovascular health
  • Reduce chronic pain
  • Improve athletic performance in other sports such as golf or tennis

4. Why slow is the way to go?
Slow is so much better for many reasons. Here at S+, we know that if you’re doing your exercises slowly and concentrating your efforts:
  • You are playing it safe and making sure you don’t get injured. Because injuries often happen when speed and weight (or mass) are combined.
  • You are far more effective at stimulating muscle growth because you are working harder.
  • You’ll reach your maximum sooner and shorten your workout time.
5. How to tell if you’re making progress?
We chart your progress week after week.
You’ll know you’re getting stronger when you’re lifting a specific weight and you realize that you can lift that same weight for longer, or your number of repetitions have increased.

For example, if you lifted 45 pounds on the leg extension machine for 1 minute this week, and then next week, you were able to do it for 1 minute, and 10 seconds, this is what we call progress.

6. How does the S+ Trial program work?
The S+ Trial program gives you five  twenty minute private one-on-one sessions with one of our strength training specialists. Note that you will NOT be doing 20 minutes of exercise on the first day! In the first sessions, you'll have time to ask questions, learn to do each movement properly, understand how each piece of equipment works, and get a clear idea of how you will feel when you do the program. In your first session, you might spend as little as 5 or 10 minutes exercising. And you’ll take time to rest between exercises.

7. What’s the purpose of the S+ Trial program?
At S+, we want you to be able to incorporate strength training exercises into your life. During the trial period, we will show you the basics of everything you need to know. With strength training as part of your life (even done only once a week!), you’ll have the strength and energy to take control of your life and do the things you love to do!

9. Why do we have assistants and not trainers?
All sessions are private. Just you and your assistant throughout the whole workout. Assistant? Not trainer or coach? Yes, the people who take you through your exercise routine are certified personal trainers and kinesiologists, but we think of them as your assistants. They guide you, assist you, and encourage you. They don’t push you, guilt you, or intimidate you into doing something that doesn’t feel right for you.

10. How is the S+ Studio different than other gyms?
The S+ program is offered in a unique studio setting where bright natural light and quiet atmosphere provide an excellent environment for one-on-one sessions with a qualified S+ assistant. There is no loud music nor wall-to-wall mirrors. There are only ten machines, which is why there are just a few people training at the same time at the studio.
